How to Plan Food Stations for a Bar Mitzvah or Simcha (Kosher, NY & NJ)

A bar mitzvah, a sheva brachos, an upsherin, a vort. Every simcha is different, but the question is always the same: what are we going to serve? More and more families in New York and New Jersey are choosing live food stations instead of (or alongside) a traditional sit-down meal. The food is made fresh in front of the guests, the room has more energy, and there's something for everyone.

Here's how to plan kosher food stations for your simcha, step by step.

Step 1: Start with your crowd, not the menu

Before you pick a single station, think about who is coming. A bar mitzvah with a big group of the boy's friends needs something different from a sheva brachos for family and close friends, or an upsherin full of little cousins.

  • Mostly children and teens? Pizza, fries, cotton candy, slush and ice cream are always a hit.

  • Mostly adults? Think sushi, a pasta station, a salad bar, an omelet or bagel station, and espresso and hot drinks.

  • A mix of ages? Go with one filling station, one lighter option, and one sweet station so everyone finds something.

Your headcount matters too. Some stations have a minimum (sushi, for example, starts at 30 guests and ice cream at 70), so it's worth sharing your number early.

Step 2: Keep it kosher, and keep it simple

Every kosher simcha has one question to settle early: will the meal be fleishig or dairy? Many of the most popular live stations, like fresh pizza, mozzarella sticks, ice cream and milkshakes, are dairy. If your main meal is meat, those stations don't belong at the same event.

There are two easy ways to handle it:

  • Make it a dairy simcha. A dairy bar mitzvah or kiddush with live stations is fun, relaxed, and often easier on the budget than a full meat meal.

  • Keep a meat meal and add pareve stations. Ask us which stations can be done pareve for your event.

MG Celebrations works under reliable hashgacha (Tarnopol). If your family or your hall has specific standards, ask us for details before you book.

Step 3: Choose how many stations you need

A common mistake is booking too many stations, or too few. Here's a simple way to think about it:

  • Small simcha (family and close friends): one main station plus one sweet station is usually plenty.

  • Medium simcha: two main stations and one or two sweet or snack stations keep lines short.

  • Large simcha: plan stations based on how fast guests can be served. A popcorn or cotton candy station can serve roughly 100 guests an hour, while made-to-order stations like crepes or omelets move a little slower. Extra servers can be added for big crowds.

Tell us your headcount and the length of the event, and we'll suggest a lineup that keeps food moving without a lot of leftovers.

Step 4: Plan the room and the timing

Food stations need a little planning on the venue side. Before the day, find out:

  • Where the stations will go, with enough space for a line in front of each.

  • Where power is available, and whether the hall has any rules about cooking on site.

  • When the setup crew can get in, and when the room needs to be cleared.

  • The flow of the evening: when the speeches are, when the food opens, and when dessert comes out.

A good tip for a bar mitzvah: open the main stations right after the speeches, and bring out the sweet stations a bit later. It gives the evening a second wind and keeps guests from leaving early.
